麦国强1978年就来二沙了，除了进国家队去过北京几年，他一直待在这里。他已经过了退休的年纪，现在是返聘教练。他其实也是国家队的教练，但他不愿去北京。在广州，在二沙，训练条件更适合他。而且，这么多队员，怎么走得开。教练员在各方面都要管运动员，“像高级保姆，退役以后的工作都要帮他们想想办法。”
